Dans le métro :- Comme nous avons laissé les voitures à Boulogne, prenons le métro.
- Mais j’ai oublié de prendre des tickets.
- Aucune importance. J'en ai. Je t’en donne un.
- La ligne 10 arrive. Tu crois qu’il y a beaucoup de monde.
- Il y en a toujours beaucoup le samedi.
- Alors, restons debout, l’un contre l’autre. Combien de stations ?
- J’ai compté, il y a onze stations jusqu’à Boulogne.
TRANSLATION
- As we left the cars in Boulogne, let’s take the métro.

Laisser : to leave. Métro (masc.) : métro, métropolitan, subway, underground. Oublier : to forget. Ticket (masc.) : ticket. Ligne (fém.) : lign. Debout : up. L’un contre l’autre : one against each other. Contre : against. Station (fém.): station. Jusqu’à : until, till. |
Here we meet for the first time pronoun en. In the first sentence, it replaces the indefinite article and the noun. We could translate it with some.
J’en ai (= des tickets de métro).
In the second sentence, it could be translated by one of them. Je t’en donne un (= un des tickets de métro)
In the third sentence, it replaces the partitive article and the noun. We could translate it by some. Il y en a toujours beaucoup le samedi (= du monde).
It may also replace other words or expressions. We’ll see that later. |
