We have to see now how to form the passé simple with the verbs of the 3rd group.
There are three possibilities, depending on the verbs. 1. Some of them conjugate exactly as the verb of the 2nd group. The endings are :
-is, -is, -it, -îmes, -îtes, -irent.
2. Some of them have specific endings :
-us, -us, -ut, -ûmes, -ûtes, -urent.
3. Verbs tenir and venir and all verbs that contain them (such as obtenir, détenir, survenir, advenir, and so on) conjugate this way :
-ins, -ins, -int, -înmes, -întes, -inrent.

Attention ! Some verbs have a really different stem at the passé simple. For example, vivre that becomes je vécus, tu vécus, il vécut, … or naître that becomes je naquis, tu naquis, il naquit, … . |
